Starring - Will Ferrell & John Heder.
Running Time - 93 minutes
Rated - 12A
This film stars two of films finest comedy performers in Heder and Ferrell, so pairing them together was always going to prove very successful. John Heder is the actor behind the cult figure “Napoleon Dynamite”. Will Ferrell, who was hilarious in “Anchorman”, is steadily announcing himself as the new Jim Carrey.
The film is based on the two leading figure skaters in the world, Chazz Michael Michaels (Ferrell) and Jimmy MacElroy (Heder). They are fierce rivals with very little respect for the others style. After clashing at the World WinterSport games the pair are banned from men’s singles competition for life. However the two skaters are soon begrudgingly reunited as a crazed fan makes them aware that they can resume their quest for gold, but only if they compete as pair.
The plot always sounded ridiculous and to be honest the trailer didn’t inspire me much either. Nevertheless I was laughing throughout, with the hilarious opening setting a great standard which was rarely lowered. The scenes involving both Ferrell and Heder are the funniest, in particular their first competitive dance together, it's still making me chuckle!!!
One thing I’m still wondering about is how they made the ice sequences so realistic. I realize that special effects in this current age are amazing, but at times I was convinced I was witnessing the pair of them actually ice skate. The move is nicely scripted and also of a respectable duration that you don’t get sick of them too quickly.
If light hearted comedies is your thing, then go and see this film right away, waiting for it to come out on DVD is do yourself a disservice. I may get this on DVD when it comes out, but I’m allowed because I’ve already seen it on the big screen!
Best Bit: Jimmy MacElroy retrieving the key to his handcuffs in some public toilets.
Rating: 3 out of 5, Heder and Ferrell combine to conjure up a real gem in this one, don’t miss it!!!
