Film Reviews :Borat

Starring - Sacha Baron Cohen
Running Time - 84 minutes
Rated - 15
.
This film possesses very little script or storyline so I feel it’s important to outline this before we go any further. Borat Sagdiyev (Cohen), a famous Kazakhstan TV personality is sent to America to make a documentary for the Kazakhstan Ministry of Information. It is also very important to note that this is all completely fictitious, and the actual Kazakhstan Government have come out publicly to distance themselves from Borat.

The film opens with Borat in his hometown introducing the various members of his family, including his sister. To be honest I was already thinking about switching off the DVD player. For me the humour of characters like Borat and previously Ali G, came from the way his victims didn’t know who he was. When they’re playing the characters with other fictional characters they tend to lose their x-factor which makes them funny, which probably explains why Ali G the Movie was so poor!

However I didn’t turn it off and I was genuinely glad I didn’t, because for the remaining 75 minutes I was aching in laughter. The style of film meant it comprised of lots of mini interviews with Americans who genuinely believe this is some strange foreigner who’s unaware of American customs.

Some of the scenes your not sure whether to laugh at the perfect timing of some of Borat’s comments or at the complete naivety of the people he’s interviewing. The interview with the 3 feminists is priceless, and even the scenes of Borat introducing himself to strangers in the street produces a laugh. Throughout all his meetings Borat is simply trying to produce a reaction from his subjects, and in most cases the results are outstanding.

This film was highly controversial but also critically acclaimed at the same time, so for me you have to see it just to form your own opinion. Make sure you see this with an open mind and a willingness to be entertained and I am certain you won’t be disappointed.

Best Bit: When Borat is visiting an antiques store and keep an eye out for the naked wrestling, its hard not too laugh.

Rating: 3 out of 5. This guy has produced another classic alter ego in Borat, and this is a perfect showcase of that…Yerkshemash.
