Pierce Brosnan's first outing as 007, races to Russia in search of the stolen access codes for "GoldenEye," an awesome space weapon that can fire a devastating electromagnetic pulse toward the Earth. Bond is up against an enemy who anticipates his every move: Alec Trevelyan (Bean), a.k.a. Agent 006, a mastermind motivated by years of simmering hatred.
As Bond squares off against his former compatriot, he also battles Trevelyan's stunning ally, Xenia Onatopp, an assassin who can kill men with her sexy thighs. But don’t despair Bond has a fetching computer programmer who helps Bond any way she can.
When the horrifying extent of Trevelyan's plans is revealed, Bond must call upon his sharp wits and killer instincts in a deadly confrontation. From a destructive tank chase through the streets of St. Petersburg to the treacherous Cuban jungle, Bond finds himself playing a cat-and-mouse game to the finish.
A non-stop action adventure from start to finish, Brosnan set a very high standard for himself and this standard was rarely lowered. It’s important to note the performance of Sean Bean as Alec Trevelyan, whose cunning screen presence really gave you the opinion that Bond was in for a hard time. The film is a classic cocktail of great car chases, tacky one-liners, sexy women, wicked villains and plenty of gadgets. I suppose if you had to list must have ingredients for any Bond film then the list just mentioned would pretty much complete it.
You could watch this over and over again and never get bored, and if you do get tired of it you could buy an N64 for about £20 from EBay and play the computer game too. It needs to be mentioned how groundbreaking the computer game introducing people to the never before seen four screen format. However, I do feel that the computer games success is down to that of the film and it will take some fine performances from Daniel Craig or whomever to better Pierce Brosnan in this 007 classic.
Best Bit: Brosnan cruising around St Petersburg in nothing other than a tank, classic James Bond action.
Rating: 5 out of 5, not only is this the greatest Bond film of modern times, but also spawned the greatest multiplayer computer game of all time.
