Film Reviews :Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End

Starring - Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, Bill Nighy, Geoffrey Rush & Chow Yun-Fat.
Running Time - 167 minutes
Rated - 12A

In the follow-up to the record-breaking 2006 smash hit, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, we find our heroes Will Turner (Bloom), Elizabeth Swann (Knightley) allied with Captain Barbossa (Rush) in a desperate quest to free Captain Jack Sparrow (Depp) from his mind-bending trap in Davy Jones' locker. Meanwhile the terrifying ghost ship, The Flying Dutchman and Davy Jones (Nighy), under the control of the East India Trading Company, wreaks havoc across the Seven Seas.

Navigating through treachery, betrayal and wild waters, they must forge their way to exotic Singapore and confront the cunning Chinese Pirate Sao Feng (Chow Yun-Fat). Forced to head beyond the very ends of the earth, each must ultimately choose a side in a final, titanic battle - as not only their lives and fortunes, but the entire future of the freedom-loving Pirate way, hangs in the balance.

A simple storyline it seems but don’t be fooled, this film does go upside down and inside out a few times to leave you questioning who’s on whose side. With so much double crossing and secret plans you could be forgiven to be slightly confused as to what’s going on. But enough of the cynicism, this is still great cinema and a film that, despite its length, still had you enthralled the whole way.

Bloom and Knightley still test my patience and I’m sure could have been cast better from the outset, but their ineptitude is quickly forgotten once Captain Jack Sparrow hits your screens. Johnny Depp is as amusing as he is engrossing; he produces a truly memorable performance, and one that leaves out some of the other fringe characters in his wake. However most of the films laughs do come from Jack the Monkey not Jack the Pirate.

Admittedly, this film isn’t as good as the previous, but if we’re being honest they were so amazingly good that it was never going to be. However, put aside the crazy plots and the appearance of characters that you could have done without, this film still had the ability to impress.

Best Bit: The final fight scene is special effects of the highest calibre, and any scene with Johnny Depp was simply brilliant.

Rating: 3 out of 5, not as good as its predecessors but despite having the dreaded trilogy tag hanging round its neck it was still an entertaining and enjoyable film.
