I suppose this film wouldn’t have the same feeling of overwhelming anticipation for any people not born in the 1980’s. Transformers was one of those TV programmes when I was younger that is still embedded in my memory and my nephew is currently playing with my Transformers today. When I first saw the trailer of this movie, I couldn’t remember experiencing such excitement.
For those of you who are unaware of the concept of Transformers it really is quite simple. They are robots who take on the form of extremely cool looking vehicles; they are “robots in disguise”. Also it’s important to add these aren’t like a Johnny 5 or C3PO style robots. These are massive robots whose arms are replaced with massive guns and they just ooze all round coolness.
Thankfully for all you newcomers the storyline isn’t to complex and doesn’t require any previous knowledge on the programme.
For centuries, two races of robotic aliens–the Autobots and the Decepticons–have waged a war, with the fate of the universe at stake. When the battle comes to Earth, all that stands between the evil Decepticons and ultimate power is a clue held by young Sam Witwicky (LaBeouf). Sam and his friend Mikaela (Fox) find themselves in a tug of war between the Autobots and Decepticons.
The smoothness of the storyline, plus its humour, allows you to focus on the visual spectacle instead of trying to work out what’s going on. Trust me when I tell you this is a treat for your eyes. It is the old cliché that this film has to be seen at the big screen to be completely appreciated, but in this case it is absolutely the case.
Now I did get the impression that they were holding back at times, probably to save material for the sequels, but this film was definitely worth waiting for. I bounced with excitement and joy throughout the whole thing, and even my Dad who had no youthful connection with it was enjoying the experience. Go see this movie, whatever age you are, its one of the movies of the summer, end of story.
Best Bit: Watching the front grill of the articulated lorry that is Optimus Prime come into view made my hairs on the back of my neck stand on end.
Rating: 4 out of 5, great action and incredible special effects as surprisingly supported with a really amusing script, a good couple of hours well spent.
