Film Reviews :The Bourne Ultimatum

Starring - Matt Damon, Julia Stiles, David Strathairn & Albert Finney.
Running Time - 111 minutes
Rated - 15

Let me start by saying that if you haven’t seen the previous two films, The Bourne Identity and The Bourne Supremacy, then make sure you do before you watch this supposed final instalment. Although it is a great action, and you could still enjoy for what it is, it will have more meaning with the knowledge of the other two behind it.

For all those of you who haven’t seen the first two films, trust me that they are just as good as this one, so that gives you something to look forward too! Here is a brief outline for you to wet your appetite.

Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) is hunted by the people who made him what he is. Having lost his memory, he is undeterred by the barrage of bullets and a new generation of highly-trained killers. Bourne has only one objective: to go back to the beginning and find out who he was.

The success of the Bourne series of films undoubtedly generated a great deal of interest in the media once this film was released. I had heard mixed reviews about it but the majority of them were all positive. Nevertheless before I had even seen this, personally my mind was already made up. I went to the cinema in complete confidence that I was going to enjoy it and that it was going to be a great movie.

In The Bourne Ultimatum, Treadstone, which is the top-secret black-ops program that created Jason Bourne, is now non-operational. It has been changed to the joint Department of Defence program Blackbriar. Blackbriar is a ruthless operation with a new generation of trained killers, hidden from domestic or foreign oversight, at the government's disposal. To them, Bourne is a $30-million malfunctioning threat who must be taken out, once and for all. To him, they are the only link to a life he has tried in vain to forget.

This a highly paced, yet cleverly constructed, action from the outset and it’s the films originality which sets it apart from other action movies. It has the ability to surprise and you find it hard to predict where the next twist is coming from. The Bourne Ultimatum is real cinematic masterpiece, and I feel one of the most successful trilogies we have seen in a while.

Best Bit: When Jason Bourne makes his way into the CIA substation.

Rating: 4 out of 5, a brilliant third film, in what has been a simply excellent trilogy of films.
