Murrow scores with new safer goalposts
Following a successful funding bid the Football Foundation has awarded a group of young people from Murrow a £447 grant to replace the football goalposts on the Playing Field with new and safer ones. Wisbech St Mary Parish Council and Murrow Playing Field Committee also contributed money towards the goalposts.
The group of young footballers, all aged between 13 and 15 years old, have been working on the project since March 2007. Their main aims are to improve the football facilities in the village and to form a youth football team. The idea for this came from the young people attending a ‘Youthoria Multimedia Drop In’ session at Murrow Book Café. The group created a DVD to explain why they need better football facilities and sent this as supporting evidence with letters and application forms to a number of organisations.
The group applied to Cambridgeshire Youth Bank for funding for some training equipment, and for a coach and a youth worker to support them in establishing the team. They have been successful with this application and received £2910. The young people in the group will also be working towards accreditation for their hard work and achievements. Alice Goose, the youth worker who supported their application, says “The group are passionate about playing football for their village. They have worked very hard on this project and learnt lots of new skills such as how to make a DVD and how to apply for funding. On behalf of the group I would like to thank everyone who has supported them and the Book Café for allowing us to meet on a Thursday evening and work on the project”.
