16 - 19 Bursary Fund

From September 2011, if you're over 16 and need some financial support to help you stay in education or training, you can apply to your school, college or learning provider for support from the new 16 - 19 Bursary Fund.

Students most in need will receive a bursary of £1200 a year. This will include

  • young people in care
  • care leavers
  • those receiving income support
  • disabled young people receiving both Employment Support Allowance and Disability Living Allowance

Other students who are facing financial difficulties are able to apply to their school, college or training provider for a bursary to help with the costs of learning. They will decide on the amount you receive, when it is paid and whether there are any conditions you will need to meet.

Details on how to apply for a bursary in Cambridgeshire are outlined on Cambridgeshire County Council's website.

EMA

The EMA scheme closed in January 2011.

For 2011/2012 some young people will carry on getting EMA:

  • if you first applied for EMA in 2009/2010 and received a Notice of Entitlement guaranteeing your EMA payment for three years, you'll carry on receiving the same EMA payment for 2011/2012
  • if you first applied for EMA in 2010/2011 and receive the maximum weekly payment of £30 per week, for 2011/2012 you will receive £20 a week while you study.
