Here are some simple, commonsense ways to stay safe and look after yourself when you're out and about:
- Tell someone where you are going, when you plan to be back and how you are getting home
- If possible travel with a friend or group of friends
- Keep your mobile with you. If you don't have one make sure you have a phone card or some spare change with you
- Always carry the number of a well-known taxi company with you
- Don't accept rides from unlicensed, independent taxi drivers
- Walk in the middle of the pavement, facing oncoming traffic
- Stay alert - don't use your MP3 or mobile as it will stop you from being aware of what is going on around you
- Carry a 'screech' alarm and keep it in your hand, not in your pocket or bag
- Always wait for a bus or train in a well-lit place and near others if possible
- Beware of 'spiked' drinks - always keep your drink with you
- If you meet someone new and they offer you a drink either politely refuse, or go to the bar with them to watch it being poured
Trust your instincts - if you don't feel things are right, don't ignore them, act on them straightaway.
