The World Cup in Soham

Football team

Grants mean youngsters in Soham will be able to watch World Cup football games on a large screen and sample the food of the various countries taking part.

The trustees of the Soham Village College charity have given £2,000 and Cambridgeshire Police have donated £1,000 towards the project.

The money has been spent on a television aerial, licence and freeview box which can be linked to a large projector at Soham Youth Centre. The initiative has been organised by the Bottisham, Burwell and Soham locality team of Cambridgeshire County Council.

The equipment was ready in time for England’s first game on June 12 when youth workers also organised a 5-a-side football tournament at the Ross Peers Sports Centre, before watching the game in the evening.

Money will also be spent on providing food which reflects the cuisine of the country England will be playing at the time. San Marco pizzeria of Soham will be providing pizza, Soham Fish Bar will be cooking Chinese food and La Tasca will be laying on refreshments from Portugal.

Games will be shown every day at 3pm and 7pm in the Soham Youth Club at The Lode Centre.
