27/02/2019 - Pregnancy and working

27/02/19 - Female, 17 :

I am about 5 weeks pregnant and work in a pub as a waitress. I haven't told my work yet about my pregnancy but when would be the best time to tell them? Also how long into my pregnancy will I have to stop working?

Hi

Thanks for your question

Legally, you don’t have to tell your employer of your pregnancy and intention to take maternity leave until the 15th week before your baby is due. Some women announce their pregnancy at the end of the first trimester (about 12 weeks), as the risk of miscarriage is greatly reduced. However you can tell your employer at any time you feel ready and it can be before the 15th week your baby is due. You may also be entailed to maternity leave and maternity pay. The earliest your maternity leave can start is 11 weeks before your baby is due. If you would like more information please check on the Gov Website https://www.gov.uk/working-when-pregnant-your-rights.

I can see you live in the South Cambs area? you may also want to contact your local Children’s Centre on 01954 286012 or Romsey Mill on 01223 566021,  they can offer more support and advice.

Good luck
