Transport costs for 16 to 19 year olds

Changes for 2016

From 1 September 2016 there will be some important changes to the financial support offered by the Council for post-16 students beginning a new course of study.

Eligibility information

From the 1 September financial support will only be available for students living in low income households who meet the Council’s qualifying criteria.

Support will continue for students who are already part-way through a course, which started before 1 September 2016, for the remainder of that course only.

Support will also continue for students with statements of special education needs and disabilities (SEND) or Education Health and Care Plans (EHCP) who meet the Council’s qualifying criteria.

How do I apply?

You will be able to apply for assistance for the 2016/17 academic year online or on paper from 1 June 2016.

The cost of transport for your post-16 course will depend on where you live and where you intend to study. Transport support is dependent on you attending your nearest post-16 centre.

  • Your Local Authority can help with transport costs; if you meet certain criteria they may be able to offer you a subsidised travel pass
  • Some colleges organise their own buses; the costs vary, so you would need to check individual college websites for detailed information
  • A few people can get free transport; this depends on personal circumstances
